Search Term Research

Search term research is the foundation of any search engine optimization strategy. You must know what search terms you are going to target before you start writing your content.

Think of it this way: if you wanted to build a wooden chair, where would you start? Would you buy the wood and just start cutting? Or would you figure out the dimensions, features, and amount of wood required?

That is what search term research (also known as keyword research) is all about. You have to think about your target audience, and what words they are going to type into a search engine when they are looking for your product.

You also have to consider the competition for a given search term. If your search term is dominated by a well established and optimized site, you may want to consider altering your search term.

Let me give an example: If you run a website selling aluminum trinkets, you have to size up your competition. Let's say your preferred search term is "Aluminum Trinkets". You do test search, and you find AlumiCo at number one. You find they have a page rank of 8 and 50,000 incoming links. You have to determine if you have the resources, time, and patience to compete for this search term.

If you determine you cannot, maybe you could alter your search term to be more specific, and less competitive.

A good tool to check the popularity and competitiveness of a search term is the Google Keyword Tool

Once you have your target search terms, you can move on to the next section.
