WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Democrats, in response to U.S. President George W. Bush's State of the Union address on Monday night, urged Bush to work with the Democrats-controlled Congress and help the U.S. regain global standing lost because of the Iraq war.

"If more Republicans in Congress stand with us this year, we won't have to wait for a new president to restore America's role in the world and fight a more effective war on terror," Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said in the Democrats' response.

"The last five years have cost us dearly _ in lives lost; in thousands of wounded warriors whose futures may never be the same;in challenges not met here at home because our resources were committed elsewhere. America's foreign policy has left us withfewer allies and more enemies," Sebelius said.

"Join us, Mr. President, and working together with Congress to make tough, smart decisions; we will regain our standing in the world and protect our people and our interests," Sebelius said.

There has been sharp division between the Bush administration and the Democrats-controlled Congress. The Congress has demanded Bush to accomplish a string of Democratic objectives, but Bush hassignalled he will not consider them in the last year of his administration.
