Swords to Be Biggest Irish Town

Swords to Be Biggest Irish Town

Jan 28, 06:07 PM

SWORDS is set to become the biggest town in Ireland and will have a larger population than Limerick city by 2020, according to a new report.

The north Dublin suburb will boast more than 56,000 residents in the next decade, boosting its population by a third and leaving Irelands two other largest towns, Drogheda and Dundalk, behind.

While the countrys population is on line to hit the 5 million mark by 2020, the Euromonitor Internationals World Economic Prospects report shows the only city likely to lose residents will be Limerick which will see its population slide by 1,000 to just under 54,000.

And while Dublin and Galway cities will continue to expand, Cork faces a major slowdown.

It will grow by just 4,000 to 127,000, as the capital sees its city population surge to over 610,000 an increase of 70,000 residents.

Galway city will jump from 77,000 residents to over 100,000, while Waterford will reach just over 56,000 at the end of the next decade.

Commuter towns like Dundalk, Drogheda and Bray will level off with populations of 38,000, 35,000 and 33,000 respectively.
