Kennedy to Back Obama

By ANTON ANTONOWICZ

SENATOR Edward Kennedy will announce today that he is backing Barack Obama - giving him a huge boost in his bid to win the Democrats' nomination.

His support, which comes after Obama's sweeping victory in the South Carolina primary, is viewed as the most significant in the party.

A Kennedy associate said Edward - JFK's younger brother - believes Obama can "transcend race" and bring unity.

Obama won 55 per cent of South Carolina's votes. Hillary Clinton got 27 per cent and John Edwards 18.

Hillary, who took New Hampshire and Nevada, goes into next week's Super Tuesday vote leading the polls in all 22 states.

John McCain is leading the race for the Republican nomination.
