MUSIC giants are in talks about backing a digital service which will allow people to download songs for free.

Record companies have spent years attempting to fight illegal file-sharing, which has made a dent in their profits, through the courts.

But EMI, Sony BMG, and Universal Music are now in talks with digital service Qtrax about backing a free file-sharing service.

If the record companies sign up to a deal, fans could be able to download and keep for free music from a catalogue of more than 25 million songs.

The site will show a limited amount of advertising to pay for the free songs, but will not be compatible initially with iPods.

Yesterday record companies said they had not signed a deal with Qtrax, despite reports this morning that they had done so. But insiders said talks were ongoing.
