Detroit Mayor's Chief of Staff Resigns

In her letter of resignation, Christine Beatty said it was clear that I can no longer effectively carry out the duties of her post, The Detroit News reported.

Beatty, Kilpatrick's friend from high school, and the mayor said under oath in an earlier trial that they didn't have an affair. However, text messages between the two seemingly contradict their denials.

I painfully regret the devastation that the recent reports have caused to the citizens of Detroit, to my co-workers to the mayor's family and to my family and friends, her letter read.

Sam Riddle, chief of staff to Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers, said he recommended to Conyers that she draft a resolution to begin an investigation into whether Kilpatrick did anything to keep the information private.

The council informally was looking into whether the mayor would be forced to repay the city $8.4 million in settlements paid to former police officers claiming they were retaliation victims for investigating allegations that might have unearthed the mayor's alleged liaison with Beatty.
