However, Sam Lutfi insisted the troubled pop singer's problems were "treatable".

Lutfi was also said to have told a US television show the star is being supported by her mum Lynne, who she had previously fallen out with.

Veteran journalist Barbara Walters revealed Lutfi contacted The View show to provide an update on Britney's situation.

She said: "He told us Britney is suffering from what he described as 'mental issues which are treatable'.

"He said she has been to a psychiatrist and that she - I assume this - has started some kind of treatment.

"She has been having mood swings. She has been having trouble sleeping. Also, she is in touch with her mother.

"Her mother has been very supportive of what Britney is going to do."

Lynne arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday, fuelling speculation she is trying to heal a longstanding rift with Britney.

She has been estranged from her wayward daughter since last summer, when they reportedly fell out over Britney's kids.
