BRIEF: About UND's Forensic Anthropology Laboratory

Jan. 28--One of the projects Dr. Phoebe Stubblefield, forensic anthropologist with UND's anthropology department, has worked on in recent months is getting a lab together for her forensic anthropology classes.

The hope is to expand the forensic studies program, she said.

The new lab space, which includes several lab areas for professors, a classroom and a specimen freezer, is "modeled after a functional crime lab," Stubblefield said.

The department has grown since Stubblefield started in 2003, from the 17 students graduating from the program then to as many as 130 students signing up for forensic science courses per year. Many of those students are studying criminal justice, Stubblefield said. The program was started in 1999, she said.

Students practice different identifying techniques using the remains of pigs, for the most part, she said. Human skeletal remains that have been donated to science are also part of study.
