Update: Obama Grabs Victory

BARACK OBAMA was celebrating last night after winning the Democrats' South Carolina Primary.

He beat rival Hillary Clinton and local boy John Edwards in the racially-tense State.

The victory is Obama's first since Iowa on January 3 and is vital shot-in-the-arm for his election campaign.

About half the voters were black, with black women turning out in particularly large numbers. The victory was predicted as polls closed by surveys of voters as they left.

Obama, 47, is thought to have scooped around 25 per cent of the vote.
