THE North East was the only region of the UK which saw its population drop in the past 10 years, according to a new survey.

A study by Halifax found the population in the region dropped 20,000 between 1996 and 2006.

This compared with an extra 2.5 million people moving from other areas of the UK to the South East during the same period.

But the South East also had the second highest level of people leaving it for other areas of the UK.

This left it with a net gain of 384,000 people from internal migration, the second biggest jump in the UK.

Martin Ellis, Halifax chief economist, said: "Figures highlight the transient nature of the population in many of the UK's major cities."
