EU Approves Proposed Acquisition of Cognos By IBM

BRUSSELS, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission has cleared the proposed acquisition of the Canadian company Cognos, an independent provider of business analytics software, by IBM Corp. of the United States, said the commission on Thursday.

The transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Union (EU), said the commission, the executive body of the EU.

IBM provides a wide range of information technology solutions comprising software, hardware and services. Cognos offers businessanalytics software solutions which corporate customers use to analyze, report and visualize data across their organization to gain better insight into their businesses.

A commission investigation established that the acquisition would not have negative effects on competition in the business analytics sector and its various sub-divisions in the EU as the parties' combined market share would be moderate.
