Osby's Late Bucket Helps Maryland Shock Top-Ranked Tar Heels

Osby's Late Bucket Helps Maryland Shock Top-Ranked Tar Heels

Jan 19, 10:15 PM

Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Bambale Osby's layup with 21 seconds left put Maryland on top, and a Tyler Hansbrough miss at the buzzer helped Maryland shock the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, 82-80, at the Smith Center.

It was tied with 43.4 seconds on the clock and Maryland with possession following its last timeout. The Terrapins then got the ball underneath to Osby, who nearly tripped but managed to finish with the left hand, tapping the ball in off the glass.

UNC had one last chance, but with 10.7 remaining Danny Green missed a tip-in and Wayne Ellington missed a driving shot as the ball bounced toward the bench, with several players falling on it before it rolled out of bounds. The Tar Heels got it back with 1.7 seconds showing, but Hansbrough's three-point attempt hit off the rim as the horn sounded.

"Wayne (Ellington) was coming off the top and I was coming off the side," said Hansbrough. "Wayne was our first option, but it just didn't go that way."

James Gist led the Terrapins (12-7, 2-2 ACC) with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Landon Milbourne chipped in with 14, while Greivis Vasquez and Osby added 12 each. Vasquez also dished out 11 assists and had six boards for Maryland, which has won six of its last seven games and was an 18-point underdog coming in.

"The game today was one of those things where I thought we were playing good enough defense over the last five games to be competitive," said Terrapins head coach Gary Williams. "Where we were struggling was scoring the ball. We have been working hard with things on offense, trying a few new things just being more patient."

Hansbrough had a team-high 17 points and 14 rebounds for North Carolina (18-1, 3-1 ACC), which barely escaped its contest against Georgia Tech on Wednesday, with an 83-82 decision. The Tar Heels couldn't avert disaster this time, however, and shot just 38 percent in the contest.

Ellington ended with 14 points as the Tar Heels fell four wins shy of the best start in school history. The 1985-86 squad started 21-0.

Maryland came to play from the opening tip, and eventually jumped out to a 15-11 edge behind a Vasquez trey. The Tar Heels answered with a 9-0 run and appeared to have the momentum, but the Terrapins fought back with a 10-2 burst, highlighted by a Milbourne three and capped by a Gist jumper that made it 27-22 with 7:16 in the half.

The Tar Heels again went back in front, but Maryland matched them nearly bucket-for-bucket until the final minute, when the Terrapins ended on a 5-0 run and took a 41-35 lead into the locker room.

North Carolina continued to struggle at the start of the second half and trailed by double digits, 51-41, less than four minutes in. The Heels charged back, though, and after seven consecutive buckets -- and on an 18-8 run -- managed to tie it at 59-59 on a Hansbrough jumper at 10:57.

Maryland quickly reopened a four-point edge, but Hansbrough closed the gap for the Heels, before Deon Thompson's shot off the glass put the home squad in front, 66-64.

The pesky Terrapins wouldn't go away, but a three-ball by UNC's Will Graves made it 73-72 and seemed to put the momentum in the Tar Heels' corner with 4:26 left.

Just inside of three minutes, a couple of huge offensive rebounds following a missed free throw by Marcus Ginyard kept the ball in the Heels' possession, and a Green lay-in and subsequent shot from the charity stripe made it 78-74 with 2:29 left.

Vasquez made a quick bucket, then helped the Terrapins tie it up when he drew a foul on Green with 1:22 left and made a pair from the line. That cleared the way for the back-and-forth finish, with the Terrapins eventually celebrating the upset at midcourt.

"I guess it starts with the respect of the other team," said Green, on the recurring lack of intensity shown by tue Tar Heels. "We didn't respect them (the Terrapins) as much as we should have and they came out hitting a lot more shots than we expected, a high percentage in the paint and a high percentage outside as well."

Game Notes

UNC shot just 35 percent in the first half, making only 13 of its first 37 attempts, including just 4-of-12 from three-point range...Maryland shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) in the contest...UNC held the edge on the glass, 46-38...The Tar Heels had been riding the sixth-best winning streak in school history...The Terrapins won in Chapel Hill for the first time since 2003...UNC still leads the all-time series between the schools, 113-55, and holds a 53-17 edge against Maryland at home.
