Silicon Valley, Jan. 18 (Jiji Press)--Nintendo Co.'s Wii home video game console and DS portable game machine dominated the U.S. video game market in 2007, according to a survey by a U.S. research company.

The DS became the best-selling game machine in the United States with sales of 8.5 million units, followed by the Wii console with 6.3 million units, NPD Group Inc. said. The Japanese firm's two blockbuster products accounted for 52 pct of overall game console sales in the country.

Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 was ranked third with 4.6 million units and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation 3 fourth with 2.6 million units.

By the end of last year, Nintendo had sold out the DS and Wii machines, with inventories of software and accessories nearly cleared out, the company said in a statement. "Nintendo continues its momentum into 2008 with a strong lineup of games," it added.

In 2007, overall game sales in the United States increased 43 pct from the previous year to 17,940 million dollars. Of the total, sales of hardware rose 54 pct to 7,046 million dollars, the research firm said.END
