PRINCE William yesterday described the thrill of flying solo for the first time as he gets to grips with an intensive RAF course.

The 25-year-old royal took to the air by himself yesterday after his instructor said he was ready - much to the surprise of the prince.

William piloted a light aircraft from RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire, where he is at flight training school.

The prince, an Army officer, is on a four-month attachment with the RAF.

He is following in the footsteps of his father, Prince Charles, who earned his wings 35 years ago.

William, who was only eight days into his course when he was allowed to fly solo, said: "God knows how somebody trusted me with an aircraft and my own life.

"It was an amazing feeling. I couldn't believe it.

"Once I'd taken off it was fine, you just remember your checks and do all the things you've got to do and fly the circuit.

"I was watching the runway getting closer and closer and thinking, please, please don't mess this up."
