EXTRA 1,200 NHS TRANSPLANT OPS TO SAVE LIVES AN extra 1,200 organ transplants could be carried out each year - saving thousands of lives - under new Government plans. Health Minister Alan Johnson yesterday gave backing for 14 recommendations to increase organ donation rates by 50 per cent over the next five years. Dedicated teams to retrieve organs 24 hours a day will speed up the process while the number of transplant co-ordinators will be doubled to around 200. The NHS will also be told to "embrace organ donation as a usual, not an unusual event". Mr Johnson said: "Donating an organ is the greatest gift anyone can give." 8 OUT OF 10 KIDS HAVE OWN TELLY AN incredible 80 per cent of children now have a TV set in their bedroom, market research company Childwise said yesterday. The figure has rocketed from two-thirds since 2001 - but only 25 per cent read a book daily. (c) 2008 Daily Mirror. Provided by ProQuest Information and Learning. All rights Reserved.
