BRIEF: Abortions in State at New Low

Jan. 18--The number of abortions in Wisconsin reached a record low in 2005, a new study shows.

The report, published by the Guttmacher Institute, found that there were 9,800 abortions in 2005, down from 11,130 in 2000. The number was an 11% decrease and the lowest reported since 1973, when 8,160 abortions were performed in the state.

The survey also found that there were 1,787 U.S. abortion providers, including nine from Wisconsin, in 2005.

Wisconsin reported its highest number of abortions and abortion providers in 1980. According to the report, 31 providers performed 21,790 abortions in 1980. The number of abortions began a steady decline in 1981.

The Wisconsin trend was similar to that seen in the United States, where the number of abortions among females ages 15 to 44 declined from 1.3 million in 2000 to 1.2 million in 2005, about an 8% drop that continued a trend that began after 1990, when the number of abortions peaked at more than 1.6 million, the survey says.

The findings will appear in the March issue of the journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health.
