Davie, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Dolphins finally ended weeks of speculation and officially named Tony Sparano their new head coach.

Sparano, who becomes the eighth coach in Dolphins history, had spent the past five seasons as an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys and had long been rumored as the top choice for the job. He's had a relationship with new Dolphins executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells and new general manager Jeff Ireland with the Cowboys.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge," said the 46-year-old Sparano, who will take over a team that went 1-15 in 2007. "I've worked for a lot of great coaches. Coach Parcells has taught me the most and prepared me for this job."

When Parcells took over as head coach of the Cowboys in 2003, Sparano joined him as tight ends coach. He moved to offensive line coach in 2005 and called plays for Parcells in 2006, then was given the title of assistant head coach under Wade Phillips this past season.

The Cowboys were 13-3 in 2007 and saw their season come to an end on Sunday with a 21-17 loss to the New York Giants in the NFC Divisional Playoffs.

Sparano had previously met with Ireland in Dallas during the Cowboys' playoff bye week, and flew to Miami on Tuesday to meet with Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga. The job was officially offered on Wednesday morning.

Before his stint with Dallas, Sparano had been an assistant with the Cleveland Browns from 1999-2000, Washington in 2001 and Jacksonville in 2002. He's been a head coach on the collegiate level, with Division II New Haven from 1994-98.

Sparano will replace Cam Cameron, who had just one season at the helm and led the Dolphins to their worst record in franchise history.

"At the end of the day I can't be concerned about what happened in the past," Sparano commented. "We just have to go on from here."

The Dolphins have had just one winning season in the past four years -- a 9-7 mark in 2005 in Nick Saban's first year. Saban bolted for Alabama after a 6-10 campaign in 2006.

Miami has not reached the playoffs since the 2001 season and the six-year postseason drought is the longest in club history.
