Three Bombings Kill 15 in Baghdad

Three Bombings Kill 15 in Baghdad

Jan 07, 06:52 AM

Three separate suicide bombers targeting Sunni Muslims opposed to al-Qaida killed 15 people Monday in Baghdad and wounded 30 others.

The first two attacks targeted U.S.-backed Awakening Councils, which are regional groups of former Sunni insurgent fighters who turned against al-Qaida extremists, the BBC said.

The leader of the group and five others were killed in the blast and 10 others were injured when the bomber approached the leader and hugged him before setting off the suicide belt.

The attack was inside a northern Baghdad compound of the Sunni Endowment, which oversees Sunni religious sites in the country. The northern suburb is home to the Abu Hanifa mosque, Iraq's most revered Sunni shrine, the Abu Hanifa mosque.

About 10 minutes later, a second Sunni council was targeted by a bomber, who killed eight people and wounded 15 others, CNN reported.

Just after midday, police said a roadside bomb exploded in the city commercial district, killing a civilian and injuring three police officers and another civilian, the report said. Three Bombings Kill 15 in Baghdad
