Foggy Wis. Pile-Ups Kill Two, Injure 50

Jan 07, 07:19 AM

Cleanup of a highway resumed Monday after more than 100 vehicles slammed into one another in dense fog a day earlier near Madison, Wis., police said.

Two people were killed and at least 50 others were injured Sunday afternoon in two chain-reaction crashes on Interstate 90 when dense fog suddenly rolled in, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.

Three of the injured had life-threatening injuries, police said.

As many as 100 emergency personnel were needed to sort through the wreckage and round up those who weren't injured, the report said.

Wisconsin State Patrol Lt. Lauri Steeber told the Journal-Sentinel the first incident began at 2:25 p.m. when a wall of fog formed and southbound a tractor trailer plowed through quite a few vehicles, killing one person.

Soon after in the nearby northbound lanes, a second chain reaction pileup happened, in which the second fatality occurred, Steeber said.

As of Monday, no charges had been filed, the newspaper said. Foggy Wis. Pile-Ups Kill Two, Injure 50
