Jan. 7--The studs

Chris Chambers

and Vincent Jackson

Chambers, a Chargers wide receiver, appearing in his first NFL postseason game after spending his first six-plus years at Miami, caught six passes for 121 yards, and Jackson added five for 114 and a TD. Jackson had catches of 20, 25 and 39 yards; Chambers had two catches of 19 yards, a 31- and a 39-yarder.

The dud

Chris Brown

With the Titans already leading 3-0 in the first quarter, Brown, a Tennessee running back, lost a fumble at the San Diego 12.

The number

3 Titans kicker Rob Bironas' field goal represented the first three points the Chargers have allowed in the first quarter in nine home games this season.

Key plays

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers implored the coaching staff to challenge the spot when running back LaDainian Tomlinson was stopped a foot short of the goal line on a third-down pass with 8:49 left in the game.

Tomlinson's elbow hit the ground while he was tackled by Titans safety Vincent Fuller, and the call on the field stood, costing San Diego its final timeout.

On fourth down, Tomlinson's second effort on a plunge put him over the goal line, and Titans coach Jeff Fisher challenged the ruling. That call also stood, giving San Diego a 17-6 lead.

Local connection

Dave Rayner, who lasted 10 weeks as the Chiefs' kicker, resurfaced with the Chargers as a kickoff specialist because of a leg injury to Nate Kaeding, who is still handling place kicks. Rayner, who was the AFC's Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Chiefs' 30-16 victory at San Diego, sent his kickoffs to the 6, 10, 7 and 3.

Final word

"I yelled 'Miss' when (Adam) Vinatieri missed that field goal."
