OPRAH Winfrey has said she was "devastated" to discover 15 girls at her South African academy had made complaints of sexual abuse by staff.

Dormitory matron Tiny Virginia Makopo, 27, faces 13 charges of indecent assault, assault and criminal injury at the star's pounds 20million school for disadvantaged girls.

Chat show queen Winfrey, 53, said: "This has been one of the most devastating experiences of my life. I was really shaken to my core.

"What I know is no one can destroy the dream I have held at this school."

Winfrey, abused herself when she was nine, added: "My experience with child predators is no one ever abuses just one child."

Makopo has so far denied charges relating to seven of the girls at a hearing in Johannesburg. She was freed on bail.
