Current Headlines: LEONARDO da Vinci's Last Supper has been posted on the internet in a 16 billion pixel image.

The high-resolution will allow art lovers and experts to examine the 15th-century work as if they were just inches away - including traces of drawings underneath it.

The image is 1,600 times more detailed than those taken with a 10 million pixel digital camera.

The Last Supper is in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy but viewings are now restricted to 25 visitors every 15 minutes.

Curator Alberto Artioli said of the web version at www.haltadefinizione.com: "You can see how Leonardo made the cups transparent, something you can't ordinarily see."

Restoration of the painting was completed in 1999.
