Current Headlines: New 'Star Trek' film leaves Shatner out

LOS ANGELES - The original Capt. Kirk is disheartened he won't get to boldly go anywhere with his old pal Spock in the new Star Trek movie.

While Leonard Nimoy is reprising his role as the pointy-eared Vulcan in next year's flick, William Shatner is not on board as Kirk.

"I couldn't believe it. I'm not in the movie at all. Leonard, God bless his heart, is in, but not me," Mr. Shatner, 76, told The Associated Press .

Director J.J. Abrams announced last summer that Mr. Nimoy would reprise the role he originated opposite Mr. Shatner in the 1960s TV show and played again in six films.

Mr. Abrams said Mr. Shatner probably would have a part in the film, which is due in theaters in 2008. But while they had a couple of meetings, nothing came of it.

* Kid Rock isn't one to back down from a fight, but says he doesn't go looking for trouble. "Last thing I want is to have a reputation. I believe in standing up for things I believe in," the 36-year-old rock-rapper told Ellen DeGeneres on her syndicated talk show Thursday. "Being honest sometimes gets me in a little bit of trouble."

* Daniel Dae Kim, one of the stars on ABC's Lost, has apologized for his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving. Mr. Kim said he was deeply ashamed and embarrassed and will fully cooperate with police, in a statement issued Friday by his publicist.

* Lynne Spears is planning to write a book about raising her family in the glare of the media spotlight. The memoir could be a gossip lover's delight, providing maternal insight into the life of her recently troubled daughter Britney Spears.

* Porter Wagoner, who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, has been released from the hospital and moved to hospice care, a spokeswoman for the Grand Ole Opry said Friday.
