NEW YORK, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The health authorities of New York City is taking a second crack at making chain restaurants display calorie information on their menus or menu boards, local media reported on Thursday.

After its first effort was struck down by a federal judge last month, the city has revised its policy so it applies to all restaurants with 15 or more outlets, the NY1 News said.

The city's Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said on Wednesdaynight that a recent survey found most fast-food customers did not know the calorie content of what they were eating.

"Ninety-seven percent of patrons didn't see any calorie information even after they had made the purchase," the official said.

"We want people to see it before they make the purchase. You can decide to eat whatever you want, but an informed consumer is going to make healthier choices, " he added.

The proposal is part of the city government's fight against obesity, which will be voted on in January next year by the Board of Health of the city, after a public hearing scheduled for Nov. 27.
