BRIEF: Robert Goulet Awaits Lung Transplant: A Donor Lung Still Has Yet to Be Found

Oct. 24--Veteran performer Robert Goulet is hospitalized and sedated, awaiting surgery that will determine his future showbiz career.

The actor-singer is currently in critical condition at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center awaiting an emergency lung transplant to treat his interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, report news sources. A suitable donor lung, however, has yet to be found.

The 73-year-old Goulet began feeling weak and short of breath after a Syracuse, New York concert, and on Sept. 30 he was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital. He was diagnosed with the disease, what his personal website describes as "a rare but rapidly progressive and fatal condition," and then transfered to Cedars on Oct. 13. The performer is currently sedated and has a breathing tube down his throat.

Goulet's third wife, Vera, remains hopeful about the transplant, which has an 88 percednt success rate. The couple's 25th anniversary was on Oct. 17.

Throughout Goulet's long career, he's made a name for himself in music, on Broadway, TV and even film. Besides performing on tour, Goulet was recently seen on the small screen in commercials for Emerald nuts.
