Hu Stresses Socialism Theme

Current Headlines: The Chinese Communist Party opened its 17th party Congress Monday with President Hu Jintao stressing the socialist theme in his keynote address.

Addressing more than 2,200 delegates in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, Hu set the tone of the seven-day session, urging the need to hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese Characteristics for building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The party Congress, China's premiere political event, is held every five years to outline the Communist Party of China's programs in the coming years. It also offers a window to the emerging leadership decided by the new Central Committee.
