The musical, based on a 1949 book by his stepmother, Maria von Trapp, tells the story of an Austrian woman who marries a widower with seven children and teaches them music. Born in 1915, von Trapp was the fourth child of Captain Georg von Trapp and his first wife. In the film, he was "Kurt". In 1938, he and his family escaped from Nazi-occupied Austria to a life in the US.
