Doctor: Ted Kennedy's Surgery 'Routine'

Oct 12, 06:16 PM

Current Headlines: A doctor for Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., said Kennedy is expected to recover fully following surgery in Boston Friday to open a blocked artery in his neck.

The surgery was routine, uneventful and successful, Dr. Richard Cambria, chief of vascular and endovascular surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, told The Boston Globe.

Kennedy, 75, required the operation to unblock his left carotid artery to prevent the possibility of a stroke, Cambria said. The senior Democratic senator was expected to be discharged during the weekend and return to work in about a week.

Kennedy had no symptoms before the blockage was found when an MRI was performed on his neck and back.
