A Step Closer to Diy Termination

Oct 12, 05:59 PM

Current Headlines: WOMEN could soon be able to have a termination in their living room after Government advisors ruled home abortions were safe.

Drugs are already available which can trigger a miscarriage but the Department of Health has always said the procedure must be supervised in a hospital or clinic.

In an early abortion, a woman can take a drug which blocks the pregnancy hormones that normally ensure the womb's lining holds on to the fertilised egg.

Two days later, she returns to hospital for a second tablet, which triggers contractions and a miscarriage within a few hours.

Ministers have previously refused to allow women to carry out the second stage at home because of safety concerns.

But the Independent Advisory Group on Sexual Health and HIV yesterday told the Commons science and technology committee that home abortions would not endanger women.

The Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists also supported the call.

The Department of Health is evaluating trials of early medical abortions outside hospitals..
