POP queen Kylie was honoured at the Q Awards last night for her triumphant comeback following her battle with breast cancer.

Picking up her Q Idol gong, the singer, who is about to release her new album, said she's "so happy to be back at work".

The star showed off a new Marilyn Monroeesque hair do and a figure-hugging black frock at the ceremony. Her win was greeted with a standing ovation from the crowd of celebrities at London's Grosvenor House hotel.

The 39-year-old is working on a new album after winning her battle with breast cancer. This was her first appearance at an awards ceremony since returning to the limelight.

"It's my first day back at work like this so it's very exciting and slightly nerve-wracking," she admitted as she arrived.

Of her Q Idol award, she told the audience: "Don't ask me what it means, but I'm grateful and honoured to be receiving this."

Former Beatle Paul McCartney turned the air blue when he picked up his Q Icon gong.

Sir Paul, 64, took to the stage after a succession of acts including Ian Brown, had given speeches littered with four-letter words.

He said: "I've been doing this since I was just a bairn and it's still the same for me now - still the same magic, still the same emotion, still the same thrill. It's so magic, this f***ing business."

He added: "I had to swear - everyone else has."

Paul, currently embroiled in a bitter divorce battle with his ex, Heather Mills, also paid tribute to his late wife Linda for supporting him through his career.

He said "I want to thank all the people that have been around. John, George and Ringo, and I want to thank Linda for seeing me through some really tough times."

Other winners at the awards, held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel, included Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys and Billy Bragg.

Top DJ Mark Ronson, picked up Amy's award for her as she was unable to make it.

Arctic Monkeys were presented with the Best Act In The World Today award by Dame Shirley Bassey.

Frontman Alex Turner, who covered Bassey's Diamonds Are Forever at Glastonbury this year, declared it "fantastic they've got Dame Shirl to come down for us".

Scots star KT Tunstall, presented her hero Billy Bragg with the Q Classic Songwriter award.

Singer Ian Brown picked up the Q Legend Award and Ricky Wilson's Kaiser Chiefs won Best Video for Ruby.

The most emotional moment came when an Peter Hook paid tribute to the Q Hero Award winner Anthony Wilson, who died from cancer in August, aged 57.

The award was accepted by Wilson's children, Oliver and Isobel, who told the audience: "We miss him and it's nice to know other people do too."
