Sony to Set Up DRAM Design JV With German Firm

Current Headlines: Tokyo, Oct. 2 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Sony Corp. said Tuesday it will set up a joint venture to design dynamic random access memory chips for consumer and graphic applications with German semiconductor maker Qimonda AG.

The fifty-fifty joint venture, Qreatic Design Inc., will be set up in Tokyo in December with capital of 80 million yen.

Sony and Qimonda will commission the design of custom DRAMs to Qreatic Design. Qimonda will manufacture the DRAMs.

The new firm is expected to help Sony save on costs and time needed for product development, thus allowing it to speed up releases of highly competitive DRAM products.

"We believe the integration of both companies' technological strengths will lead to unprecedented levels of creativity and design that will continue to develop in the future," Sony Executive Deputy President Yutaka Nakagawa said in a statement.

Ties between Sony and Qimonda started in September 2004. The German firm makes custom DRAMs for Sony.END
