EDITORIAL: Doughnuts Aren't Going to Be Health Food

Aug. 28--There's still no such thing as

a "healthy doughnut"

Dunkin' Donuts is curbing trans fat, not stretching the truth. A doughnut, after all, is still a doughnut, a concoction of white flour, sugar and fat.

So, the fast food chain should get some credit for getting on the good health bandwagon -- belatedly by some standards -- without creating a new oxymoron. There's still no such thing as a "healthy doughnut."

By switching oils and reformulating its cooking procedures, Dunkin' Donuts hopes to move its menu toward "zero grams trans fat" by October in 5,400 restaurants across 34 states. The goal is to keep trans fat below half a gram per serving in its cookies, croissants, muffins and doughnuts.

It's a start, but not one that should lead anyone to think that eating doughnuts, even the new and improved ones, will lead to good health.
