Chertoff: U.S. Taking Precautions

Jul 01, 03:10 PM

Current Headlines: Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Sunday precautions are being taken in the United States following the terrorist bomb plots in Britain.

Britain was on its highest level of terror alert Sunday amid the arrests of five people suspected in three bomb plots. The arrests came after Saturday's attack on Scotland's Glasgow Airport, when a burning car crashed into terminal doors, was linked to two failed car bombs discovered Friday in London's West End, BBC News reported.

Chertoff, speaking on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, said it was a reasonable working assumption that the attempted car bomb plots in London and Glasgow are linked.

He told Fox New Sunday, adding we're more carefully monitoring to see whether there's any potential impact here in this country."

Chertoff said there will be added security measures at airports and transit stations during the July 4 holiday period, and more air marshals on flights to Europe.

U.S. officials are, "actively monitoring networks and individuals who we believe to be connected to al-Qaida or otherwise a threat, Chertoff said on ABC.

On NBC's Meet the Press, the secretary he hasn't ruled out similar car-bombing attempts in the United States.
