Arrests in SUV Attack on Scotland Airport

Current Headlines: Police in Scotland Saturday arrested two men who drove a flaming sport utility vehicle into the main terminal at Glasgow Airport.

One was hospitalized with severe burns, The Scotsman reported.

Britain went on its highest terrorist alert after the incident, which officials said was linked to two failed car-bomb attacks in London Friday.

Lynsey McBean of Erskine was close to the Jeep at the time and watched as a plastic barrier stopped it just outside the entrance.

One of the men, I think it was the driver, brought out a plastic canister and poured it under the car, she said. He then set light to it. At that point, a policeman came over, the passenger got out of the car and punched him.

Police said one of the men arrested at Glasgow had another explosive device on his person, NPR reported.

Flights from Glasgow airport were suspended after the crash

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff Saturday issued a statement saying his office had been in contact with its British counterparts regarding the terrorist incidents in London and Glasgow.

At this point, I have seen no specific, credible information suggesting that this latest incident is connected to a threat to the (U.S.) homeland, said Chertoff. We have no plans at this time to change the national threat level, although we remind everyone that the aviation threat level has been raised to orange since last fall.

Chertoff said the Department of Homeland Security would increase security at U.S. airports, mass transit and other transportation facilities out of an abundance of caution.
