Panel: Increase ROTC Graduation Credits

Jun. 22--WILLIAMSBURG -- A policy committee at the College of William and Mary has recommended faculty members approve a measure that will increase the number of military science credits that count toward graduation -- but only by two credits, rather than the six- credit increase that was sought.

The Educational Policy Committee, composed of 21 faculty, staff and students, voted last month to send the recommendation to the full arts and sciences faculty, which is expected to vote on the proposal in September, according to Sue Peterson, the university's dean for educational policy in arts and sciences.

Faculty members will have the authority to modify the recommendation when they vote, Peterson said.

Students who are part of the ROTC program at William and Mary must take military science courses, but under the current system, only six military credit hours can be applied toward the 120 total credit hours required to graduate.

The cadets and military science department professor Lt. Col. Richard Monahan wanted the university to recognize cadets' work in military science courses, and "grant 20 credits for taking all" military science courses." Monahan proposed up to 12 of those credits be allowed to count toward graduation.
