Lawyers Want Nifong Held in Contempt

Current Headlines: Lawyers for the Duke lacrosse players falsely accused of rape asked a North Carolina judge Friday to hold District Attorney Mike Nifong in criminal contempt.

The three lawyers accused Nifong of violating court orders and rules, The Raleigh News & Observer reported. Nifong could end up behind bars if he is found to be in criminal contempt of court.

Mr. Nifong knowingly played a game of hide and seek and seek and seek and seek with the defendants and the court, the lawyers said in a motion to Judge W. Osmond Smith III.

The lawyers said Nifong lied repeatedly about DNA evidence in the case.

The North Carolina State Bar grievance committee has already ordered Nifong disbarred. He was suspended as district attorney this week.

The three lacrosse players were accused of raping an exotic dancer who had been hired to perform at a team party. They were exonerated after the state attorney general took over the case.
