Afghani President Grieves Civilian Deaths

Jun 23, 03:01 PM

Current Headlines: The failure of NATO and American-led troops to coordinate their actions are killing civilians in Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai said Saturday.

Innocent people are becoming victims of reckless operations, Karzai told reporters after a week in which nearly 90 Afghan civilians died from military fire.

Karzai criticized his western allies for extreme use of force and said they need to coordinate their operations with Afghan officials, BBC News reported.

You don't fight a terrorist by firing a field gun (24 miles) away into a target, Karzai said. That's definitely, surely, bound to cause civilian casualties."

More civilians have been killed this year by foreign military action than by insurgents, the BBC reported. NATO's secretary general called Friday for an investigation into the deaths of 25 civilians from aircraft fire in the Afghan province of Helmand.
