Current Headlines: 'Slave ship Amistad' sails to UK A REPLICA of the slave ship Amistad today set sail on a 14,000-mile voyage tracing the Atlantic route of the trade. Freedom Schooner Amistad left New Haven, Connecticut for Nova Scotia, London and Africa. In 1839, more than 50 African captives en route to Cuba seized the Amistad. The Africans later won their freedom in a historic court case. Their story was depicted in a 1997 movie by Steven Spielberg. The ship's arrival in the UK in August will mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain.
