YouTube Opens Japanese Site

Current Headlines: Tokyo, June 19 (Jiji Press)--U.S. video-sharing Web site operator YouTube said Tuesday it has opened a Japanese-language site tailored specially to the Asian country's Internet users.

The homepage and search functions have been reworked from the original U.S. version, YouTube said.

In Japan, Sony Corp. operates a similar site called "eyeVio." Competition is expected to heat up following the Japanese debut of YouTube.

The Japanese site is one of nine country-specific sites newly launched by YouTube. The other eight countries are Brazil, Britain, France, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain and the Netherlands.END
