Current Headlines: INTERLEAGUE

Indians 10, Phillies 1

Cliff Lee improved to 10-1 in interleague play and Kelly Shoppach hit a three-run homer off Cole Hamels, leading host Cleveland.

Lee (4-4), injured and inconsistent most of this season, won for just the second time in six starts, allowing one run and five hits in seven innings - his longest start since May 8.

Shoppach, batting .552 (16 for 29) in his past eight games, connected in the second inning off Hamels

(9-3), the NL's only nine-game winner. The lefthander was roughed up for six runs and eight hits in five innings - his shortest outing of 2007.

Casey Blake went 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch, ending his 26- game hitting streak. He was on deck when Josh Barfield flied out to end the eighth.

Mets 8, Twins 1

John Maine took a three-hit shutout into the eighth inning to earn his second win in eight starts, pitching New York over visiting Minnesota.

Carlos Delgado homered and Maine (7-4) limited Minnesota to four hits over 7

u2153 innings as the NL East leaders won for only the fourth time in 16 games this month.

Maine had gone 1-4 with two no-decisions since winning five of his first six starts this season. He lost his last start at Los Angeles on June 12, when he allowed home runs on three straight pitches in a 4-1 defeat.

Maine struck out four and walked two, retiring 10 straight batters during one stretch.

Braves 9, Red Sox 4

Brian McCann homered and drove in four runs off Curt Schilling, who endured his first strikeout-free start since 1993 in Atlanta's home victory over Boston.

Schilling was rocked for 10 hits and six runs in 4

u2153 innings, his second-shortest outing of the season.

Coco Crisp homered twice for the Red Sox, and J.D. Drew went deep for Boston's other run. But McCann outdid them both, putting the Braves ahead for good with an RBI double in the fourth and chasing Schilling (6-4) the next inning.

Tigers 9, Nationals 8

Carlos Guillen and Marcus Thames homered, Detroit scored six times in the fifth and the Tigers held on to win in Washington.

Guillen drove in three runs and Gary Sheffield had two RBIs for the Tigers, who have won 3 of 4 and are 9-4 in interleague play this season.

Mike Maroth (5-2) won despite giving up five runs - four earned - on six hits over five-plus innings. The lefthander, who doubled in the fifth for his first career extra-base hit, walked two and struck out four.

White Sox 10, Marlins 6

Jim Thome added to his career interleague home run lead with a three-run shot, and host Chicago matched its season high for runs.

Jose Contreras (5-7) got his first win since May 21, allowing eight hits and five runs in 6

u2154 innings.

White Sox rightfielder Jermaine Dye made two diving, outstretched catches but had to leave the game as a precaution in the fourth inning with a strained right quadriceps.

Chicago, with only five wins in 22 games, had 13 hits. The Marlins, losers of 7 of 9, had back-to-back errors in the fourth before Thome connected for his ninth homer of the season and 53rd in interleague play.

Royals 5, Cardinals 3

Odalis Perez won for only the second time in 10 starts, and Kansas City took advantage of mistakes by Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright in St. Louis.

John Buck homered and Mark Teahen had two hits and an RBI for the Royals, starting a 10-game road trip after a season-best 6-3 homestand during which they took 2 of 3 from the Cardinals while outscoring them 28-16.

Wainwright (5-6) gave up five runs - four earned - in seven innings, five days after limiting the Royals to one hit in eight scoreless innings in Kansas City.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Brewers 5, Giants 4

Prince Fielder hit his NL-leading 26th home run, Yovani Gallardo dazzled in his major league debut, and Milwaukee held off visiting San Francisco.

Barry Bonds, with 748 career home runs, went 1 for 2 with a double in the sixth and two walks as San Francisco lost its fifth game in a row. The Giants have lost 17 of 23 overall.

Mixing a 94 mph fastball with changeups 15 mph slower, the 21- year-old Gallardo (1-0) silenced the rest of the Giants and allowed just the one hit to Bonds from the second through the sixth inning.
