Minneapolis Sextuplet Dies; Five Critical

Jun 15, 07:52 AM

Current Headlines: One of the male sextuplets born premature and underweight last weekend to a Minneapolis couple has died and the other five are in critical condition.

In a statement released Thursday, the Children's Hospital of Minneapolis said the infant named Bennet Ryan Morrison died Wednesday night, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

The four boys and two girls were born 14 weeks early at the city's Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis to Brianna and Ryan Morrison, with weights ranging from 11 ounces to 1.3 pounds.

The couple, each 24, also issued a statement about the infant's death.

Our family wishes to express gratitude for the support of our families, friends and churches, as well as the staffs of Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Children's of Minnesota. Our faith remains strong in the midst of mourning our son, the statement said.

Medical experts say babies born after just 22 weeks gestation face life-threatening complications and often don't survive, the newspaper said.

The mother had been taking fertility drugs, and had a due date of Oct. 8, the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press reported.
