Richard Notebaert, the chief executive of Qwest Communications International, plans to retire as soon as he finds a successor. Notebaert, 59, will focus on family and other commitments, he said in a statement Monday. He also will retire as chairman of the board of Denver-based Qwest, which is one of the largest phone companies in the United States.

Notebaert joined Qwest in 2002 after the expulsion of Joseph Nacchio, who left after debt swelled to $26 billion and U.S. regulators began investigating company accounting. Notebaert, once head of Ameritech, prevented the company's collapse by cutting debt and upgrading high-speed Internet connections for residential customers.
