Piniella Suspended Indefinitely

Current Headlines:

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Major League Baseball suspended Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella for an indefinite period of time and fined him an undisclosed amount for his actions in the team's 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.

After Angel Pagan was thrown out trying to swipe third in the eighth inning, Piniella stormed out of the dugout to argue the call and was ejected after throwing his hat and kicking dirt on the shoes of third-base umpire Mark Wegner.

"The umpire was correct, he was out," Piniella said after the game. "I was going to argue no matter what happened because from the dugout he looked safe. The umpire got it right."

Home plate umpire Bruce Froemming filed a report with the National League over the incident, believing Piniella initiated contact with Wegner.

"He made physical contact with the third base umpire," Froemming said. "He made contact with his foot, and he kicked dirt on him several times, and the rest was show-and-tell. The whole world saw what he did. It was a terrible display of disrespect."

Piniella will begin serving his suspension on Sunday, the length of which will be determined after a meeting with John McHale Jr., the MLB executive vice president for administration on Monday.
