DUMP YOUR KIDS' HEELYS ; Exclusive Mum Karen Hits Out After Daughter Breaks Her Arm

A WORRIED mum has urged parents to bin their kids' Heelys after her daughter broke her arm while wearing the shoes.

Karen Mcdonald, 34, insists they are a danger and wants parents to ditch them.

She hit out after daughter Danielle, 12, fell and fractured her arm in two places.

Heelys, which cost around pounds 50, have a special wheel on their sole allowing youngsters to skate on them.

Their UK distributors say they are "not toys" and are sold with clear safety advice.

But Danielle's injury is just one of a series involving the shoes. And yesterday, Karen said: "Danielle will be in plaster for four weeks and won't be using Heelys again.

"I've thrown them in the bin and would suggest other parents do the same.

"These 'toys' need to be banned. And parents need to be told of their dangers."

The wheel on Danielle's Heelys jammed after picking up a small stone, causing her agonising fall. Store worker Karen, of Ruchill, Glasgow, claims hospital staff told her they've treated scores of kids injured wearing Heelys.

She said: "Danielle's had skates, skateboards and scooters and never had any problems. But with Heelys she has fallen over I don't know how many times.

"There's been all kinds of cuts, bruises and tears."

A spokeswoman for Shiner Ltd, who import Heelys, said the shoes were sold with safety guidelines.

She added: "Heelys are a sport and not a toy. They should therefore be treated in the same way as any other wheeled sporting activity.

"It is essential children wear protection in the form of knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and most importantly helmets."
