Bombs Kill 6 U.S. Soldiers, 9 Iraqis

Current Headlines: Three bombs killed six U.S. soldiers in Iraq Sunday while another blast killed nine people in a Baghdad market.

Four U.S. soldiers died in one blast that occurred northwest of Baghdad during a search operation, the BBC reported. Two more U.S. soldiers were killed and five wounded in two separate roadside blasts elsewhere.

The latest deaths brought the month's total to 14, primarily from roadside bombs, the BBC reported. The deaths continue May's trend when 127 U.S. soldiers were killed in Iraq, which was the most since November 2004.

Meanwhile, The New York Times said Sunday's suicide bombing in the village of Balad Ruz that claimed nine lives represented the most recent attack in Iraq's troubled Diyala province. Diyala also was the site of two U.S. soldiers' deaths from two bombings Saturday that also injured six other soldiers.

The Times said the deadly bombings came as coalition forces carried out raids on Mahdi Army strongholds outside Baghdad. Those raids resulted in the arrest of 10 fighters from Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr's militia and the confiscation of several weapons.
