Paramus Teacher Wins Presidential Award

PARAMUS A borough middle school teacher has received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the federal government's highest such honor.

Christine Ward-Diaz, who teaches science and math at East Brook Middle School, was named a 2006 award winner on Wednesday. Winners receive $10,000 cash prizes from the National Science Foundation and a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C.

A Hackensack resident, Ward-Diaz holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Scranton and a master's in environmental studies from Montclair State University. She was named East Brook's Teacher of the Year in 2004-05.

Paramus Superintendent Janice Dime said Ward-Diaz "makes science learning come alive in her classroom."

"She is a very dedicated, inspiring professional who loves children and loves teaching," she said.

A second New Jersey teacher, Jayne King from the Mount Laurel school district, also received a Presidential Award on Wednesday.

"These teachers bring their distinctive talents and love of their profession to the classroom every day, enriching the academic experience of their students," said state Commissioner of Education Lucille E. Davy. "Their accomplishments define them as model educators for their peers and students in New Jersey and throughout the nation."
