TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant Maxis Communications Bhd is expecting some 10,000 gamers to sign up for its latest mobile phone game called "Master of Maya" by year's end.

It has to date already achieved half the target set.

"Ten thousand is a reasonable target," Maxis general manager and head of products and infotainment business, T. Kugan, said after the official launch of the mobile phone game in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Master of Maya, which is also the world's first multi-player trading card game, is hosted on Nokia Siemens network's servers in Munich, Germany.

Maxis is the first wireless operator in the world to release the game and as other operators come onboard, Malaysian players will be able to play and trade cards with other players from across the world.

Master of Maya is available to Maxis and Hotlink customers through its mobile gaming community website.

There will be no data traffic charges, unless the Maxis user is outside Malaysia.

Maxis' advanced data services revenue - which comprises downloads, Internet surfing but excluding SMS - grew by 20 per cent to RM97 million in first quarter against RM73 million in fourth quarter last year.

Trading card games has a long history. It emerged in Malaysia for over a decade.
