Johnstown Company Voluntarily Recalls Product

Current Headlines: By Greeley Tribune, Colo.

May 31--Uniscope, Inc. in Johnstown recently informed the Food and Drug Administration that a sample of resin incorporated into a binding agent for animal feed tested positive for the chemical compound melamine, the company reported in a press release.

Uniscope makes a variety of binding additives for use by feed manufacturers, including the binding agents, Xtra-Bond and Aqua-Tec II where resin is used, the release reported. The melamine in the resin source comes from its suppliers who added it, without Uniscope's knowledge or consent, into a resin used by Uniscope to make the products, the company reported. These types of resin products have been historically used in animal feeds.

Uniscope officials state that they have received no reports of illness or deaths associated with these products. In addition, the company has seen no publicly available information that would lead it to believe that its products pose any adverse consequences to the health of humans or animals, the company reported.

Upon learning of the test results, Uniscope immediately stopped the manufacturing and delivery of Xtra-Bond and Aqua-Tec II and notified the FDA of the issue. Uniscope also is notifying its distributors and customers of the issue and has agreed to a voluntary recall, the release stated.

Uniscope, founded in 1975, is a research and development company that manufactures and markets a complete line of pellet binders, water stability binders, anti-bridging agents, pellet lubricants and additives for use in the production of pelleted and extruded animal feeds.
