Susan Stanton Fails to Get Sarasota Manager's Job

May 30, 09:33 PM

Current Headlines: By Stacey Eidson, The Bradenton Herald, Fla.

May 30--SARASOTA -Susan Stanton failed to get the Sarasota city manager's job.

She was among those interviewing with city commissioners today, but was not selecteds as one of the finalists for the job. She had sought to allay concerns about her transgender notoriety.

As Steve Stanton, he was was fired as Largo city manager, when he announced he planned to have a sex-change operation.

Stanton is one of five candidates interviewing with Sarasota city commissioners this morning, and with a citizens advisory committee at 1 p.m.

Although Stanton has not had the sex-change operation yet, she is dressing as a woman and going by the name Susan.

When she has the operation, it will keep her out of work 1½ to two weeks, not several months as some have reported, Stanton said.

Stanton also called the widespread media interest in her a "legitimate concern."

"Is the media going to be sitting in the hallways every time I walk into city hall? she said.

After several weeks, the novelty will wear off and the media will realize "it doesn't matter what kind of necklace I'm wearing or what color my shoes are."

Stanton said if she gets the Sarasota job, she doesn't believe it would be appropriate for her to play a prominent national role in the transgender movement or be a fixture on national TV.

Recently, she appeared on Larry King Live and Comedy Central.

Stanton also said she did not believe writing and promoting a book about her experiences would be appropriate at this time.
