To Have Any Chance

Current Headlines: Population overload (Editorial, May 11) hit the nail on the head. Growth in human population leads to a growth in demand for goods and services. This increases production, which results in even greater carbon emissions, further accelerating climate change.

Under the Kyoto protocol, world leaders have pledged to reduce their countries' carbon emissions to 1990 levels. To have any chance of achieving these targets, the first step must be to reduce our population to what it was in 1990.

I've yet to hear any world leader tackle this fundamental issue.
